We still do things the Old Way
Because the Hearth Matters. and we seek to keep the Fire Alive!
We are equally traditionalists as inventors.
The old ways make sense - and modern materials allow for some creative problem solving. We strive to maintain the integrity of these unique structural typologies, with both reverence and innovation - a synergy of time and place, perfectly sited in the round.
Gentle, Gentle
We are light on the land, and quiet to the ear.
It is vitally important to us that our projects honor their site and maintain good relations with environmental vectors.
Earth, Air, Fire, Water - the interplay and balance between these elements influence all of our decisions, from design through install.
We can have a 314 sqft yurt frame up in about 4 hours - and ready to use by the end of day! Our process is well prepared in advance - bundles of modular parts, tidy bins and bags of hardware, and a highly organized team make for quick work.
It’s rare that neighbors know we’re working - and that’s how we like it. If the birds and bees are still happy in the forest or garden beside us - we’re doing it right.
Our materials are sourced as close to home as we can - our Cherrywood frames and Southern Yellow Pine are from within 200 miles. We are diligent in keeping our ecological footprint clean, every site is fresh with new life as we depart and bid it a blessed birth day.
Au Naturale
We aren’t shy to show you our bones.
Our commitment to providing a safe and natural product is apparent as soon as you walk in the door. Food-grade walnut oil, anti-microbial plant essences, and sanctifying resins all delight the senses and give levels of protection unmatched within the craft. We hand-treat each piece with our in-house blend of yum.
Further, every board and post is purposefully resurfaced and dimensioned - we have found our frames to be remarkably mold and mildew resistant because of the thorough care that goes into preparing these wooden members. You won’t find any lumber yard stamps or rough edges in these assemblies. We strive to finish these to fine furniture standards, as pleasing to the hand as the eye.
It’s in the Details
We believe in showing you exactly where our hands have been. Our little marks of love mean everything to us.
As an Architect : I design the forms to follow function, and direct the geometry to play within harmonics.
As an Artist : I embelish surface, edge, and volume to convey the craft heritage and skill exchange of my history.
As a Storyteller : I infuse the magic and narratives of these seemingly universal structures into their skin and bones.
Tradition - Why it’s Important
Yurts are rich with meaning, natural order, and cultural practice. This complex gravity and seemingly universal form is what drew me to them while studying Architecture at Cornell University, amidst deep dives in anthropological studies and exploration of ritual.
The Crown’s Cross-Arches speak to the Four Directions, while the Eye to Heaven draws down the Cosmos. 48 poles radiate like the rays of the sun, held warm by a nest of curved lattice.
Elegant Bones. Intuitive Harmonics. Geometry and Physics that Make Sense. The Human Creature find Peace in the Traditional Yurt.
and we are the Only Crafters on the American Continents preserving this.
Innovation, Where there’s Room To Grow
As a designer, I can’t help but creatively problem solve and engage with the ever-evolving “what if” and “why not”. There are tactful ways to respect tradition and utilize modern technologies for the best possible performance.
Our dome system is exactly that - a patent pending ventilation method that utilized concentric acrylic domes. The main dome has a 8” hole that allows air to move freely and pressures to equalize. A secondary dome acts as a rain shield, sized and overlapped just right to protect from wind-blown infiltration.
This system is one-of-a-kind in the industry, and solves a long standing problem : how to passively vent in all weather? This solution is elegant and well engineered - and we believe it is the best innovation the yurt world has seen in 40 years!
